To get acquainted with Altea, leave the car behind and roam the streets at your leisure. There is a seafront esplanade adorned with palm trees and cafes and restaurant terraces. In the commercial part of the town you find narrow streets, flanked by typical mediterrnean white houses with balconies festooned with flowers and plants. The old part of the town and its main square, is dominated by the impressive blue domed church with magnificent views of the coast. Here too are numerous bars and restaurants with terraces to enjoy a drink or sample some of the local cuisine. A further attraction for well heeled tourists is the five star Melia Hotel.

Altea has become a popular town with artists from all over the world, living and selling their work here. The coast is flanked by tall cliffs and beaches while to the south, the Gelada mountains closes off the bay, crowned by the Altea lighthouse. During the last week of September, Altea celebrates its major fiestas, dedicated to the Moors and Christians. Altea is then filled with music, masks, processions, pageantry, dances and concerts to enliven the atmosphere, and the whole town takes part.

Browse over the local crafts displayed on the stalls of the Plaze de la Iglesia, or in the weekly market held very Tuesday.
